#001 The invisible CEO ceiling

Most CEOs think they’re stuck because of strategy. They’re wrong.

The invisible CEO ceiling

READ TIME - 4 MINUTES

I believed our growth plateau was a strategy problem.

I remember sitting on the floor of our small Boulder, CO basement apartment late one night, surrounded by stacks of yoga mats, packaging prototypes, and a whiteboard filled with launch ideas, influencer campaigns, and wholesale plans.

In 2010, my husband, Scott, and I rented out our dream home to save every dollar we could and pour it back into our yoga mat startup. We had just finished another long conversation about how to scale—new product lines, new channels, new messaging.

On paper, everything looked fabulous. We had a product people loved and a clear path forward. But something felt off.

Decisions felt heavier than they should have, alignment took longer than expected, and progress wasn’t matching our effort. As we wrapped up for the night, I sat there staring at the board, disheartened—quietly wondering if I was missing something fundamental.

What I learned is this: the ceiling wasn’t in the strategy—it was in how I saw myself as a CEO.

Stop solving identity problems with strategy.

If you don’t, you’ll keep stacking more tactics on top of a foundation that can’t support your next level of growth.

This lesson is critical because most CEOs respond to stagnation by doing more—more hires, more meetings, more pivots. But when the root issue is identity, those actions create noise, not progress.

Decisions become slower because you second-guess yourself. Teams feel misaligned because they’re reacting to inconsistency at the top. Opportunities slip by because you’re operating from a smaller version of yourself.

On the other hand, when you shift your identity, everything compounds: decisions become clean and fast, your team trusts and follows with clarity, and opportunities seem to “appear” because you’re finally positioned to see and act on them.

I’m going to show you exactly how to make that shift.

#1. Upgrade your internal standard before your external strategy.

This matters because your standards determine what you tolerate—and what you tolerate determines your results.

Start by doing three things:

  • Audit your current decisions: Where are you choosing “good enough” instead of “CEO-level excellence”? Write down three recent examples.

  • Redefine your non-negotiables: Set clear standards for speed, quality, and accountability across your company.

  • Communicate and enforce: Share these standards with your team and immediately reinforce them through your actions—not just your words.

#2. Make decisions from the CEO you need to become—not the one you’ve been.

This is important because your future growth requires a different version of you than the one that got you here.

Put this into practice:

  • Create a “future CEO filter”: Before making a decision, ask, “How would the next-level version of me handle this?”

  • Shorten decision timelines: Give yourself stricter deadlines to avoid overthinking and hesitation.

  • Eliminate approval bottlenecks: Identify one area where your team is waiting on you unnecessarily—and empower them with clear decision rights.

#3. Align your team to your identity, not just your goals.

This matters because teams don’t just execute strategy—they mirror leadership.

Take these steps:

  • Recast your vision: Clearly articulate not just what you’re building, but who you are as a company at the highest level.

  • Identify misalignment: Look for team members or processes that no longer fit the next-level identity.

  • Reinforce daily: Use meetings, feedback, and recognition to consistently anchor your team in this upgraded identity.

I used to think I needed a better plan. In reality, I needed a better lens. If you’re feeling stuck, it’s not a sign you’re incapable—it’s a signal you’re being called to lead at a higher level. Shift who you believe you are, and watch everything else start to move.

That’s a wrap for this week—back in your inbox next Saturday.
